Boscobell Wisconsin Log Cabin

The Log Home Doctors is excited to say the least that there is a new Hiawatha Log Cabin going up in Boscobell Wisconsin. One of our great Builders is Starting a Log Cabin for Joe and Mary Smoley off of Badger Rd in Boscobell Wisconsin just after the 1st of January 2014.
This Log Cabin will be a full log construction with a 8" Swedish coped log with saddle notched corners. The Swedish cope and saddle notch design is one of the strongest log corners you can put up. sitting there stacked together you can kick the corner section and they won't fall over like many others that I won't name.

Jim From Wunnicke Construction is a very cost orientated builder he shopped 3 competitors log packages and the Log Home Doctors had the better deal by over $10,000.00 than the other big name suppliers. We have worked with Jim on many occasions and his work ethic is great as well as his customer skills.

He shared that the detail and design of the Hiawatha was so superior he had a easy choice to make and price even pushed him and his consumer that way as well. We here at the Log Home Doctors believe Jim Wunnicke always delivers a great end product with great customer satisfaction so we are glad to have Wunnuicke Construction on board 100 Percent.

Jim the Owner of Wunnicke Construction will be in our booth in January 24-26 at the Alliant Energy Center for the Lake And Cabin Show.

We will have Hiawatha Reps and Our highly qualified sales staff to assist you in your Log Cabin and Log Home building needs as well as your restoration projects.

Here at the Log Home Doctors we don't only build them Log Homes and Log Cabins we refinish and help you keep them in shape with ease.

Log Homes are not as bad as people make them seem. they get a bad rap because not all builders tell them how to properly maintain them.

Please contact us to have a tour of this project by contacting us at 608-356-5400 or email dan@loghomedoctors.net

Lake Wisconsin Log Home Project

We are proud to announce a New Hiawatha Log Home going up in the spring of 2014.

This is a neat project because it is going to be a 2 stage build. First a garage with a carriage house appeal going up and the in the spring of 2015 the additional part will go up. When its all said in done it will be a beautiful Hiawatha Log home with a garage with living quarters such as a guest house.

This will be a home that's of a half log construction on beautiful Lake Wisconsin in Lodi Wi.

This will be a Swedish cope with saddle notched corners. A very strong corner system with a great curb appeal to say the least.

This home as I said will be a half log design. So we being a Amwood home dealer will set a Amwood panelized home and it will be dried in very fast in a matter of days with windows doors and roof on it. We believe this is the best way to do a half log build in our eyes due to the fact that the weather elements are almost eliminated compared to a stick built on site. It's basically a stick built that comes with wall sections, floor sections and deck sections built on a jig in a warm factory setting. Our Amwood company is called Home Remedy Builders.

When we build a full log home we teat all of our sheeting to stop water from getting no farther than the surface of the product there

Contact us in the spring for a tour if interested in seeing a building project. Please we would ask that you don't go on the sight without  a salesperson for insurance reasons and safety for your benefit. We would never want anyone to be harmed.

Chemical cleaning your log home and mixtures

This is a old letter that was on our old website that I found I hope this helps you out if you are a do it yourself er.

  1.       First you mix 4 ounces of TSP with approximately 1 gallon of Hot Water in a garden sprayer put the lid on and shake till TSP is dissolved. This will prevent your sprayer from plugging the tip.
  2.       Then add 1/3 to 1 ½ gallons of bleach depending on the severity of the mold on your home. It is easier to let the chemicals clean so use accordingly. Then top off your sprayer with water the rest of the way.
  3.       Then wet the wall area you are starting on and with water. This seems to help prevent streaking.
  4.        Next take your garden sprayer and spay down your wall area evenly. Let sit for 5 to 15 minutes depending on how fast it’s drying. You don’t want the chemicals to dry on the wall.
  5.      We normally rinse with no more than 500lbs of direct pressure on your logs or wood surface. Also I like to go back after I have washed it and prep the next section and rinse again.
  6.      I recommend you remove your screens it prevents damage from a pressure washer and also if you stain it prevents any dripping on screens. It’s easier if you get a drop on a window to remove than the screen replacement.
  7.     Then just keep repeating this process until done.
  8.      Once cleaned leave sit for 24 to 48 hrs to let wood dry. This will change depending on how much sun and wind you have.
  9.       We recommend using a 4” stain brush they are heavier than normal and you can remove the handles and put a broom handle on them for an extension or regular roller extension.
  10.   If using Sikkens Cetol products we recommend using Kwik Ease Cleaner for brushes and combination of Paint thinner.
  11. We have all your staining or prepping needs give us a call at 608-356-5400 or email me at Dan@loghomedoctors.net

Log Home and Log Cabin repairs, refinishing , restoration, maintenance log repair.

We have served doing Log Repairs, Log cabin refinishing, log replacements, log railings,  log restoration, Cob Blasting, Staining, Chinking, caulking and many other log home or log cabin related items in multiple states and broadly in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinios, Minnesota, and Michigan.

Lately we are seeing a lot of work for Log Homes and Log Cabins in areas like Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire , Rice Lake, Spooner, Black River Falls, Menomonie, Hudson, Onalaska, Marshfield, Tomah, Hartford, Heartland, Lake Geneva, Lake Mills, Janesville, Milton, Evensville, Darlington, Cuba City, Delavan and many more towns and city's.

We are trying to keep up and even building barriers to heat and keep working to keep your projects moving smoothly threw the colder months. When the Log Home Doctors was brought into being years ago we never thought that we would never be able to keep up.

Do to the many failing company's due to the economy and poor craftsmanship of builders we have been able to fix 100's of leaking on rotted structures and refinished 100's as well. It is a great honor to be able to help people that had leaks for 10 years or more and after working with the Log Home Doctors to finally have there leaks and other issues stopped for good.

We have seen floors on newly constructed log homes and cabins buckled up 1 foot off the floor due to the amount of water that had got under floors, walls, windows, and doors due to improper flashing or no flashing or house wrap at all.

Full most generally should have a half log upper floor system due to weight and structural integrity. At the second floor level there should be a flashing installed where the full log stops and half or quarter log begins to prevent any water getting behind the house wrap and water running down the inside of logs. Most builders don't bother putting this in or flash properly around decks, windows, and doors. This crates huge problems before you know it. This is just a small part of why we are so busy fixing improper construction issues as well as basic maintenance.

I hope you have none of these issues on your log home or log cabin but if you do we can help stop your problems by addressing them head on or handle your basic log home maintenance needs

 LOG HOME- LOG CABIN RENOVATION-RESTORATION-MAINTENANCE

Log Home Doctors has set up a division within the company dealing exclusively with log home inspections, renovations, restorations and maintenance.

Log Home Restoration

Log Home Restoration is the all inclusive phrase that any number of Log Home repair tasks would fall under, such as log repair, log replacement, media blasting, log chinking removal, log caulk removal , borate treatments, log staining, clear coat protectant, log chinking, log caulking and post, railings and deck maintenance. Lets attempt to address these subjects and a few others in a somewhat organized fashion.

Log Home Pre-purchase or General Log Home Inspection

If I had A nickel for every time I heard this one I wouldn't have to work any more"I how I wish I would have known before I bought it." We hear this phrase countless times a year at trade shows and at clients' log homes. Conventional home inspectors and Insurance company's are a great group and for the most part, they do a great job, however most don't have the years of restoration experience necessary to recognize the many issues exclusive to log homes.
For as little as a few hundred dollars, we can provide you with a professional assessment along with a written quote in contract form for any work that may to be done to correct any issues if any found . You also may be able to use this information to better leverage your position when making your offer price wise.

Log Home Exterior Consultation
We recommend that at the very least you have the exterior of your log home inspected for stain or top coat failure along with a close look at the condition of the log caulk or log chink. It is also a good idea to inspect the logs for any sign of decay and check the railings and posts for stability. This should be done at least once every two years. We will provide you with a written report along with our recommendations if any, that we feel would be beneficial to you for the preservation of your log home.

Log Repair or Maintenance

Log repair can be viewed as less invasive then log replacement. If you have logs that are decayed or showing signs of decay, we strive to replace just the outer face of the log after the decay has been removed providing that 40% to 60% of the original log is sound. This also saves trying to match the texture and the detail on the interior and is usually less costly than full log replacement.

Log Replacement

Log replacement becomes unavoidable when the decay cannot be removed by any other means other than total replacement. While this can tend to be more difficult than refacing a log or replacing half logs it is not the end of the world. When you add our years of experience in restoration to the fact that we are accomplished log home builders, we are better equipped and staffed than most to complete these projects for you with ease an ability that you can count on.

Stain Removal

There are several different methods of this to be done.
We can discuss and go over this at the time of inspection to see which process is best for your Log Home or Log Cabin. We do a lot of media or Cob blasting because so many of the homes we see are in such rough shape that's what is needed there are other options for different applications as well

Borate Treatments

After stripping the stain and prepping the logs, we treat the logs with a Boron based preservative prior to staining. Boron based preservatives are a natural based product derived from the mineral Borax. Borates help raise the Ph of the wood, thus hindering the decay organisms that cause rot.

Log Chinking and Log Caulk Removal

In some cases the condition of the log caulking or log chinking is in such bad shape that the only option is to remove the existing caulk or chinking and start over. The two main causes of log caulk and log chink failure are the use of the wrong product and or poor workmanship. Quite often if the log chinking or log caulking was applied in accordance with the manufactures specifications we can repair it and achieve satisfactory results with a little extra effort.

Log Home Staining

We do maintain a business relationship with a couple particular log home stain manufacturers or supplier, however experience has led us to recommend the use of some of the latex based and oil based log home stains manufactured specifically for log homes by companies that specialize in log home sealants. We use a few different stain products the oil base we use is a Sikkens product there are many of there products to choose from depending on the application it self.
We also use Perma Chink latex based products. I believe we use the best products out there to protect your Log Home or Log Cabin.

Log Chinking and Log Caulking

Yet another key component to the completed log home is Log Chinking or Log Caulking. One of the first things you need to know is that not everyone can caulk or chink professionally. There are several important steps that we take to assure a quality job: surface preparation, no dirt, no moisture. We will only use log home caulk or log home chinking that has been formulated for log homes by accredited log home sealant manufactures, carefully consulting the technical data information to assure product compatibility. Manufacturer's recommendations must be closely adhered to, from the installation of the bond breaker to the depth and width of the log caulking or log chinking. Again, proper application all but eliminates the likelihood of product failure.

Decks, Railings and Posts

These are probably as hard or harder to maintain in like new condition than your log home. Decks and railings normally have minimal protection from the sun and rain, if any.
With the decks we have found that semi solid stains work about as well as anything, we have given up on anything transparent for decks. For the railings we still recommend reapplying a top coat or coat of the product that was used on your log home or log cabin to provide that protectant you need to the top rail and to the top of the bottom rail once a year. One of the secrets to deck post longevity is to keep them from wicking water up from the base that they are sitting on. This can be accomplished with the use of different types of standoffs. The nature of railing posts sitting on wet decks is tough, treated slabs under your post will help prolong the posts life, but we have come to the realization that, unfortunately railing posts and railings have a life expediency and are a replaceable item.

Regular Log Home Maintenance

We recommend that at the very least you wash the dirt, cobwebs and pollen off of your log home once a year. This helps your logs breath and will allow for a more thorough inspection of your logs and the condition of the log stain and clear coat, not to mention that your log home will look much better. We do not use or nor do we recommend using pressure washers for this, we see an unbelievable amount of damage both to the log finish and to the logs themselves from pressure washers. Stick with the warm soapy water, rags and rinse with a garden hose or a chemical cleaning system. Once this is done you can inspect the caulk, or chink, stain and clear coat and repair or reapply as necessary. Remember, through all of this, the key is to get your log home finished properly once, then the regular maintenance becomes relative easy and quite affordable call for your inspection today or ask us how you can do it yourself. Wash your home like you wash your car. It is your most expensive asset.

Lake Mills Log Home Repairs

Today we meet a very nice man that had built a log home a few years back. It was obvious that there were many issues with the Log Home. There were things such as windows leaking and cold drafts to high of heat bills and some other things. The house looked wonderful.

It is so sad to hear of these types of things daily in our business. I truly believe building a Log Home or Log Cabin should be a warm and fun feeling not a disaster. We heard how the staining company treated them like garbage. Rude, not nice, and lack of information to home owner. Come on people as log home and log cabin builders / refinishers we need to do better. Treating people like they don't matter is not right. It is giving log homes a bad rap. they can be a great experience. if you don't have great communication starting out. Stop and don't start. Look at how you are being treated and how your product will end up when its done. What do they know about what they are doing. We in or business have followed many, many builders and can tell you there are so many that don't know what is correct and what is not. Building a log home has simularities of a regular home but flashing and where to flash and how to flash are big ones that matter.

We inspect more log homes than most in a years time and find so many problems. If you have questions please contact us and let us help you. We don't need to be your builder and can still help you know that you know that you are getting a honest answer from your builder or supplier.

Log Home Maintenance and Restoration

Log home maintenance has received such a bad wrap. Maintenance on your log cabin or log home can be a minimal cost if you do it regularly. Most peoples idea of log cabin or log home maintenance is watching your log cabin or log home and saying I'll do that later or next year. Then next season say I will fix my log cabin or log home in the fall when I get time or more money. Have you ever said that?

Let me help you out by saying don't put if off. It will cost you three times the money to put it off than it will for you to fix it right by not hesitating at all. I know it sounds crazy but you don't change your oil once every 2-5 years while you drive your car daily do you? Let me ask this you have your most expensive investment sitting outside in the sun, wind, rain, sleet, hail, and snow not to mention dirt pollen and other things in the air. Funny when you think about it after hearing that isn't it.

Maintenance on your log home or log cabin is cheep compared to Cobb blasting and log repair on your log cabin and log home. after your maintenance window runs out you have major log repairs and Cobb blasting and refinishing cost that far exceed the maintenance. Does this make sense looking at it from this point of view.

I would rather tell you how to maintain your log home or log cabin  yourself than see it get worse. We got into the log maintenance business not to hurt you but to help you. We are always booked up due to the fact that are work is out standing and there is so many not maintaining that our log repairs our increasing  so rapidly. put us back to work maintaining your log homes and not repairing your log homes and log cabins. You can truly save buy doing the basics. Wash your log home or log cabin off a couple times a year. A few hours a year can help you save money and your log cabin or log home repair bill.

Log home and log cabin maintenance comes first. Skip that one round of golf, boat ride, bike ride, or whatever you do and look at your log cabin or log home and see if it needs attention. If you are unsure give us a call and let's check it out.

Cleaning  Log or Log Cabin

We get asked this question many times what can I do to help prevent my house from getting this way.

I usually say do you wash your car? Of course I do they say. But have you ever cleaned your most expensive asset? No I never thought of that.

There  are several things you can do such as chemically clean your log home or log cabin, but you can even get out a hose and rinse it off or use a pressure washer with less than 500lbs of direct pressure to wash it off. this prevent dirt, pollen, bug droppings, and other debris. This stuff all help break down your finish faster.

Chemically Cleaning

You can get your garden sprayer out and mix about 4oz of TSP with about 1 gallon of hot water to dissolve it . Them mix up the rest of your 3 gallon sprayer with 1 more gallon of bleach and the remainder with water. then mix well. After mixing wet down the area you area cleaning well and evenly. then go ahead and spray down the area evenly to prevent streaking. Let sit on the surface for 10-15 minutes depending on the temp and how fast its drying. Keep the wall wet you don't want to let the bleach and chemicals to dry on the wall. if you have to keep misting water on the wall. more bleach maybe needed due to the condition of your walls or surfaces to get mold off. You should rinse thoroughly and maybe rinse a second time to clean better or this you get clear water running from the surface. I f refinishing you should let dry well due to temp it could be hours to 48 hours. If staining yourself we can help you pick the best products and help you get them at a reasonable cost as we are a dealer for Sikkens and perma chink products and also carry sashco product line up as well. We also can get your special log staining brushes and cleaning solution for those, tarps, caulking, chinking and many other things.
We at the Log Home Doctors are dedicated to helping you achieve the best quality finishes weather you do it yourself or we do the project for you.

We service several states such as Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, Illionois, and are expanding our area all the time.

Feel free to ask questions if you have some. email the Dr at dan@loghomedoctors.net or call the office at 608-356-5400

Log Railings

Log railings are beautiful but need to have tlc. People seem to let them decay without doing a thing. Do have rotten rails or do they look horrible? Many do. Rails should be cleaned and stained more often than other parts of your log home or log cabin due to the fact that they get so much sun or things sitting on them like snow, dirt, or rain. The way the round rails are shaped leaves all open grains on all sides.

What should log rails be maid of?

Rails should be made of a cedar product not pine. We replace railings daily that are made of pine. They are not treated and sit on the ground or on the deck surface with water wicking up into them every time there's moisture. You can use big logs to support homes or porches that are made of pine but they should have a treated 2x materiel under them with a vapor barrier between the post and treated lumber to stop wicking.

We the great news is that we were just like you to busy to handle anymore this summer but this is the time of year year we are gearing up to set our fall and winter schedules towards your log cabin or log home remodel, repair, or just starting from scratch with that new log cottage, cabin, home or possibly even that log lodge.
We can also do log storefronts or interior bar or dining areas.

Panelized Homes and Commercial Buildings

We also are a Amwood home dealer that can handle your business in five states around us. Amwood homes or commercial buildings are wood framed buildings or homes that are penalized in a warm climate controlled environment indoors. Amwood builds everything from floor, and wall sections to trusses and deck sections. We can set these panels with Tyvek and and windows in them so your home hardly see's and inclement weather conditions. They can be very cost effective as well. Here is our website for the Amwood packages.

Half Log Construction

We often use a Amwood home package mixed with a 1/2 Log home because it is just a hand framed home done in the comforts of a factory setting minimizing waist do to the saws used that we can have a job site setting. These computerized saws turn each and every board to prevent waist. It will take a angle cut end and flip it to make the next cut. Most times out of a entire home in the factory there is a little box of scraps less than 2' wide and 1' deep. that's impressive and that's what I call a true green home. A must see. Once the home is designed for the framing and engineering side of things then we go to one of our log company's to have the correct product fitted to finish your build out and send our log experts to do there part. This has made it possible for us to work in 5 states and not compromise quality one bit. So give us a call or shoot us a email and get you on our list for your next project.
