Log Home Maintenance and Restoration
Log home maintenance has received such a bad wrap. Maintenance on your log cabin or log home can be a minimal cost if you do it regularly. Most peoples idea of log cabin or log home maintenance is watching your log cabin or log home and saying I'll do that later or next year. Then next season say I will fix my log cabin or log home in the fall when I get time or more money. Have you ever said that?
Let me help you out by saying don't put if off. It will cost you three times the money to put it off than it will for you to fix it right by not hesitating at all. I know it sounds crazy but you don't change your oil once every 2-5 years while you drive your car daily do you? Let me ask this you have your most expensive investment sitting outside in the sun, wind, rain, sleet, hail, and snow not to mention dirt pollen and other things in the air. Funny when you think about it after hearing that isn't it.
Maintenance on your log home or log cabin is cheep compared to Cobb blasting and log repair on your log cabin and log home. after your maintenance window runs out you have major log repairs and Cobb blasting and refinishing cost that far exceed the maintenance. Does this make sense looking at it from this point of view.
I would rather tell you how to maintain your log home or log cabin yourself than see it get worse. We got into the log maintenance business not to hurt you but to help you. We are always booked up due to the fact that are work is out standing and there is so many not maintaining that our log repairs our increasing so rapidly. put us back to work maintaining your log homes and not repairing your log homes and log cabins. You can truly save buy doing the basics. Wash your log home or log cabin off a couple times a year. A few hours a year can help you save money and your log cabin or log home repair bill.
Log home and log cabin maintenance comes first. Skip that one round of golf, boat ride, bike ride, or whatever you do and look at your log cabin or log home and see if it needs attention. If you are unsure give us a call and let's check it out.

Cleaning Log or Log Cabin
We get asked this question many times what can I do to help prevent my house from getting this way.
I usually say do you wash your car? Of course I do they say. But have you ever cleaned your most expensive asset? No I never thought of that.
There are several things you can do such as chemically clean your log home or log cabin, but you can even get out a hose and rinse it off or use a pressure washer with less than 500lbs of direct pressure to wash it off. this prevent dirt, pollen, bug droppings, and other debris. This stuff all help break down your finish faster.
Chemically Cleaning
You can get your garden sprayer out and mix about 4oz of TSP with about 1 gallon of hot water to dissolve it . Them mix up the rest of your 3 gallon sprayer with 1 more gallon of bleach and the remainder with water. then mix well. After mixing wet down the area you area cleaning well and evenly. then go ahead and spray down the area evenly to prevent streaking. Let sit on the surface for 10-15 minutes depending on the temp and how fast its drying. Keep the wall wet you don't want to let the bleach and chemicals to dry on the wall. if you have to keep misting water on the wall. more bleach maybe needed due to the condition of your walls or surfaces to get mold off. You should rinse thoroughly and maybe rinse a second time to clean better or this you get clear water running from the surface. I f refinishing you should let dry well due to temp it could be hours to 48 hours. If staining yourself we can help you pick the best products and help you get them at a reasonable cost as we are a dealer for Sikkens and perma chink products and also carry sashco product line up as well. We also can get your special log staining brushes and cleaning solution for those, tarps, caulking, chinking and many other things.

Log Railings
Log railings are beautiful but need to have tlc. People seem to let them decay without doing a thing. Do have rotten rails or do they look horrible? Many do. Rails should be cleaned and stained more often than other parts of your log home or log cabin due to the fact that they get so much sun or things sitting on them like snow, dirt, or rain. The way the round rails are shaped leaves all open grains on all sides.
What should log rails be maid of?
Rails should be made of a cedar product not pine. We replace railings daily that are made of pine. They are not treated and sit on the ground or on the deck surface with water wicking up into them every time there's moisture. You can use big logs to support homes or porches that are made of pine but they should have a treated 2x materiel under them with a vapor barrier between the post and treated lumber to stop wicking.
If you have any questions feel free to contact our office at 608-356-5400 or email dan@loghomedoctors.net
