Log Railings

Log railings are beautiful but need to have tlc. People seem to let them decay without doing a thing. Do have rotten rails or do they look horrible? Many do. Rails should be cleaned and stained more often than other parts of your log home or log cabin due to the fact that they get so much sun or things sitting on them like snow, dirt, or rain. The way the round rails are shaped leaves all open grains on all sides.

What should log rails be maid of?

Rails should be made of a cedar product not pine. We replace railings daily that are made of pine. They are not treated and sit on the ground or on the deck surface with water wicking up into them every time there's moisture. You can use big logs to support homes or porches that are made of pine but they should have a treated 2x materiel under them with a vapor barrier between the post and treated lumber to stop wicking.
